GSSI’S VISION IS FOR

More sustainable seafood for everyone

Who
we are

The Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative is a pre-competitive public-private partnership bringing together hundreds of diverse organizations from across the globe. United by a common purpose:

we drive forward more sustainable seafood for everyone and preserve our aquatic resources for the future.

Through our strong relationship with the FAO, we are uniquely positioned to support our Partners in the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Our Vision

More sustainable seafood for everyone

Our mission

Ensure confidence in the supply and promotion of certified seafood as well as promote improvement efforts in seafood sustainability globally

What we offer

A Global Multi-Stakeholder Partnership

comprised of thought leaders from the seafood sector working to identify challenges, influence direction, and lend their voice toward making a positive difference.

Our Global Benchmark Tool

based on FAO Guidelines and set up to drive improvement in environmental stewardship and good governance in both wild and farmed sectors. Our GBT helps reduce confusion with the proliferation of standards and provides confidence, clarity and choice in certified seafood.

The Social Benchmark Tool

developed in collaboration with the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative (SSCI), which works to drive social justice by providing confidence in the ethics behind seafood choices.

Seafood MAP

a global platform offering everyone from smallholders to industry giants a place to build capacity, plan, implement, and communicate their sustainability journey. By connecting the sector, the platform will help close the gap for under-resourced producers that are currently left out of the process.

Outreach

which drives awareness and accelerates support by showcasing GSSI Partner efforts around the globe.

Our collaboration with the FAO

Promoting international guidelines for the seafood sector

  • GSSI has worked in close partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and its member states since its inception to operationalize and champion internationally agreed guidelines and instruments in the seafood sector.
  • The FAO Guidelines are at the heart of all GSSI programs, bringing sustainability to the forefront of the work being done in the seafood sector and to contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Moving forward, multi-stakeholder collaboration will be increasingly important to achieve the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. FAO continues to see GSSI as a key partner who can align different stakeholders in the field, provide credible benchmarks that set the bar for responsible practices, support implementation of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and amplify actions that will help us achieve the 2030 Goals.
